🎤 Education Moment Script (3–5 minutes)
Good morning, Our BNI Family! 🙌
1-to-1s are one of the most important habits in BNI. But today I want to add a word that changes everything: strategic.
Because the goal is not just to have more 1-to-1s. The goal is to have the right 1-to-1s, with the right Members, for the right reason, followed by the right next step.
🔹 Activity Is Not the Same as Strategy
It is possible to have a full 1-to-1 calendar and still not create many referrals. That usually happens when every meeting is treated the same: pleasant conversation, basic background, no clear referral path.
A strategic 1-to-1 begins before the meeting. You know why you are meeting, what you need to learn, and how this relationship could help both businesses grow.
🔹 Who Should Be on Your List?
- Members who serve the same client before, during, or after you.
- Members who already understand your target market.
- Members who are strong givers and active connectors.
- Newer Members who need help getting fully connected into Our BNI Family.
A good 1-to-1 target is not always the person you know best. Sometimes it is the person whose network overlaps with yours in a way you have not explored yet.
🔹 Ask Better Questions
Try questions that uncover referral pathways: What problem do your best clients usually have before they call you? Who refers you most often? What would make someone a poor fit? What words should I listen for in conversation?
Those answers are referral fuel. They teach you how to recognize opportunity in the real world.
🔹 Your Challenge This Week
Before scheduling your next 1-to-1, choose the reason first. Relationship depth? Power Team alignment? Visitor follow-up? New Member support? Referral clarity?
Then end the 1-to-1 with one next step. A second conversation, an introduction, a shared Visitor invitation, or a clearer referral ask. Strategy turns coffee into closed business. 💙 Spencer Reynolds

Hi [Chapter Name] Family! 👋
This week’s Education Moment focused on making 1-to-1s more strategic.
More 1-to-1s are good, but the right 1-to-1s are better. Pick Members whose clients, networks, or chapter role create real referral potential, then end every conversation with a clear next step.To reinforce this (and get part of the way toward your 1-hour CEU), here are some great BNI Podcast episodes:
