Member Development: Investing in Each Other’s Growth

Week 59 · November 9 – November 15, 2026

🎤 Education Moment Script (3–5 minutes)

Good morning, Our BNI Family! 👋

Every chapter has Members at different stages. Some are brand new, still finding their BNI footing. Some have been here for years and know the system deeply. And there’s everyone in between.

The strongest chapters treat that diversity as an asset — not by leveling it out, but by investing in each person’s next step. That’s Member development, and it’s one of the most powerful things Our BNI Family can do for long-term results.

🔹 Every Member Has a Next Step

New Members need clarity: What does a great 1-to-1 look like? How do I ask for a referral without sounding salesy? What does the BNI system actually expect of me?

Mid-tenure Members need sharpening: My message has drifted — how do I refresh it? My referral activity is comfortable but plateau-level — how do I grow?

Long-term Members need purpose: What does leadership contribution look like for me? How do I translate years of credibility into chapter-wide impact?

When you can identify where someone is in that journey, you can help them take exactly the next step that matters most.

🔹 Development Happens in 1-to-1s

The most underused Member development tool in BNI is already built into the system: the 1-to-1.

Most 1-to-1s go broad — GAINS Profiles, general conversation, polite encouragement. That’s good. But a development-focused 1-to-1 goes deeper:

“What’s one part of BNI you feel less confident about?”
“What’s the most consistent friction in your referral activity right now?”
“If your chapter knew one thing about your business that they currently don’t, what would it be?”

These questions unlock real development conversations. And they position you as someone who genuinely invests in others — which deepens trust and accelerates referral flow.

🔹 Model What You Want to See

Member development is not just a Leadership Team responsibility. Every Member in this room has the ability — and the opportunity — to develop someone else.

The most powerful development tool available to you is your own behavior. When you show up prepared, ask specific referral questions, close the loop on every referral, and engage new Members with genuine interest — you are actively developing the culture of this chapter.

People learn what networking looks like by watching people who do it well. Be the model.

🔹 A Quick Reminder / Why This Matters

A chapter that develops its Members is a chapter that retains its Members. And retention is the engine of compound referral growth.

When Members grow individually, chapter performance grows collectively. That is not coincidence — it is the designed result of an intentional system working exactly as it should.

This week, identify one Member who would benefit from a development-focused 1-to-1 conversation, and schedule it. Invest in someone’s next step — and watch what comes back around. 💙 Spencer Reynolds
