Power Teams: Multiplying Your Referral Reach

Week 56 · October 19–25, 2026

🎤 Education Moment Script (3–5 minutes)

Good morning, Our BNI Family! 👋

If you want to dramatically increase the number and quality of referrals you receive in BNI, there is one strategy that outperforms almost everything else: building a strong Power Team.

A Power Team is not just a group of people who know each other. It is a cluster of Members whose clients and professions naturally overlap — people who are already serving the same client at the same time. And when that group works together intentionally, they don’t just refer each other occasionally. They refer each other consistently, deeply, and from a place of real relationship.

🔹 The Overlap Principle

The best Power Teams are built around shared clients, not just compatible industries.

Ask yourself: who in this chapter serves the same type of client I serve — even in a completely different way? If you’re a mortgage lender, you overlap with real estate agents, home inspectors, insurance agents, and attorneys. If you’re a CPA, you overlap with financial planners, business attorneys, bookkeepers, and payroll companies. If you’re a contractor, you overlap with architects, designers, real estate investors, and property managers.

That overlap is where Power Teams are born. Identify two or three Members with strong client overlap and invest in those relationships more deeply than the rest.

🔹 Power Teams Require Investment

A Power Team is not something you join once and benefit from forever. It requires ongoing investment.

The highest-performing Power Teams in BNI meet outside the chapter meeting — monthly or quarterly at minimum. They share referral lists, identify shared targets, and strategize together about how to serve each other’s clients better.

They also communicate openly about what is working. When a referral closes, the Power Team celebrates together. When one doesn’t fit, they debrief and improve. This creates a learning loop that sharpens every introduction over time.

If your Power Team is purely transactional — passing slips at meetings without deep connection — it will underperform. Deep relationship is what makes the referrals stick.

🔹 Use the Early BNI Year to Reset Your Power Team

October is a perfect time to evaluate your Power Team. We are four weeks into the new BNI year. Relationships have had a fresh start. New Members have joined. Some existing Members have shifted their focus.

Ask yourself: are the right people in my Power Team right now? Is there someone in this chapter whose clients look exactly like mine, and we have not scheduled a 1-to-1 yet this year?

If so, reach out today. Not next week. Today. The Members who act on good ideas immediately are the Members who build the most powerful referral relationships in BNI.

🔹 Your Challenge This Week

Identify one Member whose clients overlap significantly with yours. If you already have a strong Power Team connection with them, schedule a Power Team meeting this month. If you don’t, schedule a 1-to-1 this week as the first step.

The referral relationships you build this month will be the ones paying dividends by February. Start now. Grateful to be in this room with you. 💙 Spencer Reynolds
