The Art of the Specific Ask

Week 55 · October 12–18, 2026

🎤 Education Moment Script (3–5 minutes)

Good morning, Our BNI Family! 👋

I want to talk about the single most common reason referrals don’t happen in BNI chapters that otherwise have great people and great relationships.

It is not lack of caring. It is not lack of intention. It is a vague ask.

When someone says “I’m looking for anyone who needs [what I do]” — the room nods and moves on. Nothing sticks. No one knows who to look for. Compare that to: “This week I want to meet the CFO or controller at a manufacturing company with 25 to 100 employees in the Tampa Bay area who is frustrated that their bookkeeping and their reporting are out of sync.” That lands. Members can picture that person. They go out into their week scanning for that exact profile.

Specificity is the difference between a presentation that generates referrals and one that generates nothing but goodwill.

🔹 Why Vague Asks Fail

Our brains are pattern-matching machines. When we hear something specific, our brain files it with a label: “Remember this — look for THIS person.” When we hear something vague, our brain has nowhere to put it. It dissolves.

Vague asks also put pressure on Members. If you ask for “anyone who needs marketing help,” Members feel responsible for sorting the whole world into potential clients. That is overwhelming. So they don’t act.

A specific ask gives your Connection Team a clear assignment. It removes the guesswork. It makes referring feel achievable rather than overwhelming.

🔹 The Three-Part Specific Ask

Try this structure for your Weekly Presentation this week:

1. Who: A specific type of person or business. Industry, size, role, or situation.
2. What they’re experiencing: A specific pain, goal, or trigger. What is happening in their world right now that would make them ready to talk?
3. What to listen for: One phrase or signal your chapter can catch in a real-world conversation.

Example: “This week I’m looking for a business owner in the home services space — roofing, HVAC, plumbing, electrical — who just hit a growth wall because their scheduling and dispatch system isn’t keeping up. If you hear someone say they’re drowning in coordination chaos, that’s me.”

Three parts. Thirty seconds. Completely usable by your Connection Team.

🔹 Specific Asks Build a Smarter Chapter

Here’s the bonus effect: when Members consistently hear specific asks, the whole chapter gets better at giving them. You start to hear more specific asks from others. The quality of your referral culture rises together.

Chapters that master the specific ask don’t just give more referrals. They give better referrals. Higher quality, more qualified, more relevant to the actual current need.

It is one of the highest-leverage habits a chapter can build — and it starts with one Member deciding to be specific this week.

🔹 Your Challenge This Week

Before next week’s meeting, write out your three-part specific ask. Practice saying it out loud once. Then deliver it with confidence.

And when you hear someone else give a great specific ask this week, tell them. That kind of recognition creates momentum fast. Let’s keep raising the bar together. 💙 Spencer Reynolds

Hi [Chapter Name] Family! 👋
This week’s Education Moment focused on The Art of the Specific Ask.
Vague asks disappear. Specific asks stick. The more clearly we tell Our BNI Family who to look for and what to listen for, the more referrals flow — and the better quality they are.

To reinforce this (and get part of the way toward your 1-hour CEU), here are some great BNI Podcast episodes (≈ 41–45 minutes total):
