This week we’re talking about The Power of 1-to-1s — the single most effective activity for deepening relationships and generating more referrals.
Why this matters:
Referrals don’t happen by accident — they happen because of trust. And trust is built through consistent, meaningful 1-to-1 conversations. When you take time to really understand another Member’s business, you strengthen the foundation for giving — and receiving — quality referrals.
Here’s how to make every 1-to-1 powerful:
- Plan it — don’t wing it. Schedule your 1-to-1s in advance, and come prepared. Know what you want to learn and what you want to share.
- Share your GAINS Exchange. That’s your Goals, Accomplishments, Interests, Networks, and Skills. It helps Members connect with who you really are — not just what you sell.
- Focus on learning about them. Ask questions like: “What does your ideal client look like?” or “Who’s your best referral source?”
- Follow up with action. After your 1-to-1, do something — make a referral, send an introduction, or share a resource. That’s what converts time into trust.
- Track your 1-to-1s in BNI Connect. They’re a key metric in your Traffic Lights and a huge indicator of engagement.
Pro tip: A great goal is more than one 1-to-1 each week. When you build the habit, you’ll always have fresh stories, new energy, and stronger connections in the room. Ask them who you can invite to the Chapter for them!
Remember: you can’t shortcut trust — but you can schedule it.
