Specific is Terrific: Mastering the Ask

Week 35 (May 26 – June 1, 2025)

Introduction

“Good morning, everyone! Today, we’re going to talk about the power of being specific when making a request. Whether it’s asking for a referral or for help from a fellow Member, the more specific you are, the more likely you are to get exactly what you need. Let’s explore how mastering the art of a clear, targeted ask can lead to better results.”

Body

“Here are three ways to ensure your asks are specific and effective:

1. Know what you want – Before you ask, take a moment to be clear in your mind about the exact outcome you’re looking for. Whether it’s a specific type of referral or an introduction to a particular person or industry, knowing what you want helps you communicate it more clearly.

2. Be precise in your wording – Instead of asking for ‘anyone who needs my services,’ say something like, ‘I’d love an introduction to the owner of XYZ Manufacturing, as they could benefit from my business services.’ The more detailed you are, the easier it is for others to help.

3. Explain why – Providing context for your ask helps others understand its importance. If you’re asking for a referral, explain why that particular introduction would benefit your business, making it more compelling.”

Example

“Imagine you’re a financial planner. Instead of saying, ‘I’m looking for anyone who needs financial advice,’ you could say, ‘I’d love an introduction to the HR director at ABC Corporation. I’ve helped similar companies set up retirement plans, and I believe I can add value to their employees.’ This specific ask makes it easier for others to connect you with the right person.”

Conclusion

“Being specific is the key to getting exactly what you need. By being clear about what you want, using precise language, and explaining the importance of your ask, you make it easier for others to help. Let’s all focus on mastering the art of the ask, and watch as we generate better referrals and more success.”
